Alpine Skiing

Skiing is exhilarating, liberating, addictive, wet, cold, expensive, inconvenient, unique, dangerous, chic, and accessible.

Today, almost everyone can enjoy the freedom and excitement of downhill skiing.  Adaptive equipment and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) have paved the way for most people with a physical disability to enjoy the thrills of this winter sport.  Specially designed skis, known as mono-skis and bi-skis, allow individuals with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy downhill skiing.  These adaptive skis allow skiers to ski sitting down instead of standing. Each ski is equipped with a bucket type seating apparatus. The skier uses two outrigger skis (rather than ski poles) to maneuver down the slopes.  Generally, a beginner will usually need to be tethered to a certified ski instructor (known as a ski buddy) until he or she feels comfortable on the slopes.
